Terps in the NFL playoffs

Ah, UMTerps.com. You have the prescription for hilarity. Their Terps in the Pros section, which was last updated May 8 (ie, before NFL training camp), is an absolute bastion of accuracy. Or not. According to that section, Sam Hollenbach is still in the league.  Bzzzzzzzt!

So with all due respect to the generally terrific Terps Web site, here are the former Terps that are actually still in the playoff mix. Of course, two of the most prominent former Terps whose teams are in the hunt — San Diego’s Shawne Merriman and Minnesota’s E.J. Henderson — are both out for the season.  That leaves seven Terps active on playoff rosters as of Sunday morning. The Vikes have Madieu Williams as their starting free safety, and E.J.’s brother Erin as a reserve linebacker (and I’m talking deep reserve…he’s not even listed on the team’s depth chart). Remember Jeff Dugan from his days in College Park? Yeah, me neither. But he’s the Vikes’ backup fullback.

Miami has three former Terps on their active roster as well. Defensive end Randy Starks, linebacker William Kershaw, and tight end Joey Haynos are all sporting the manly teal and orange. Starks was a defensive presence all year for the fish, recording at least one tackle in 13 games.

However, the biggest Terp in the postseason, literally, is Ravens starting left tackle and mountain of a man Jared Gaither. Just look for number 71 today versus Miami. And if you’re not so good with numbers, just look for the guy who’s blocking out the sun. Goterps.
