The Terps field hockey team erupted for eight goals in a victory over Duke on Saturday. That win earned the Terps a trip to the Final Four in Louisville, KY. Maryland was once again led by the big three All-World combination of Susie Rowe, Sarah Scholl, and Katie O’Donnell. The tournament resumes next Friday, and the Terps will face the winner of the Michigan State/Iowa game, which was suspended due to snow.
A win over Duke is always worth savoring, but this one was extra sweet because it erases Maryland’s memories of an early Second Round departure from last year’s tournament. Rowe has had an amazing season, and she scored her 70th point on Sunday, a Terp record. Thanks to the UK for sending her and Emma Thomas to Maryland. They have been Maryland’s greatest import from England since the tricorner hat. [My apologies for the lame colonial reference, but I couldn’t think of anything else that Maryland would have imported from England other than smallpox, and that’s not too appealing.]
We’ll know by Thanksgiving whether this team completes fulfills its destiny. In the meantime, congratulations are once again in order. Two more wins to go!
