Maybe it’s a good thing that I wasn’t able to watch the game due to the fact that it was aired on a cable channel you have to pay extra for or go to a bar to see. Maybe I should be thanking the athletic department. Because, by all accounts, this 31-0 shirt-front-puking at Virginia was not only bad, but was also totally and completely inexplicable. What did coach Friedgen have to say for himself? Let’s take a listen.
“You guys must think I am trying to throw these games,” said Friedgen, who later in his news conference began softly mumbling: “I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know. I think, ‘What more could I have done?’ It’s a question of whether they hear you or whether they want to hear you.”
Mumbling to oneself…always a good sign. So given this loss, which should have been cake for the team that was supposed to have learned its lessons from the Middle Tennessee debacle, what does the future hold for the Bizarro Terps? Let’s gaze into the crystal ball.
10/11 Bye Week — That’s a loss.
10/18 Wake Forest — Wake is 3-1. This is a win.
10/25 NC State — A loss to the now 2-4 Pack on homecoming day.
11/06 Va. Tech — I would say win, but the primetime TV atmosphere makes a loss too tempting. L.
11/15 North Carolina — Everyone will have counted them out by now. Commence winning streak.
11/22 Florida State — Win.
11/29 Boston College — Win.
So there you have it. There are many roads to the Emerald Nut Bowl. This is probably the strangest. But what else do you expect? Great job, Terps. Way to keep ’em mumbling.
