The Terps field hockey team went down to Winston-Salem last week and defeated the top-ranked Deamon Deacons. The win propelled them to #1 in the country! Katie O’Donnell, a young lady with a nice smile, had a goal and an assist in the game. Her performance helped her earn the honor of ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season. Following the win at Wake, the Terps kept their foot on the gas and gave the Richmond Spiders a 7-0 beat down in College Park to improve their record to 9-1.
These ladies are playing with confidence. They have seniors that have won two championships and know what it takes to win again. Not to spook them, but I think they’re going to add another title this year. Here is what senior forward Sarah Scholl had to say on her blog before the game at Wake: “This is the kind of team we want to play, to prove ourselves, to play amazing hockey, to really have to push until the last whistle and leave everything out on the field. This is the kind of game we dream about.”
You know what that sounds like? THAT SOUNDS LIKE CHAMPIONSHIP TALK TO ME, BABY! I haven’t been this excited about field hockey since I was a pizza- faced sophomore in high school.
But the ACC schedule doesn’t get any easier. The Terps travel to Charlottesville to play #10 Virginia on Saturday, and then host #9 Duke in College Park on October 11. Like a fall breeze blowing leaves to the ground, I believe that this Terps team can put the chill on the rest of the league and take it all this year. I think they believe it, too.
